About the Artists
Born and raised in the Philippines, Hera Nalam (she/they) first came to Treaty One Territory at 16 years old. Ever since then she has immersed herself in the local creative platforms all over Winnipeg from music, theatre, film and fashion and is making waves as a true inter-disciplinary artist.
Jean van der Merwe is a queer, non-binary theatre-maker, performer, and clown based in Winnipeg on Treaty 1 territory. They are a graduate of the University of Manitoba, where they obtained both an Undergraduate Degree, and a Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Music, Vocal Performance. Whether it’s their home-town of North Battleford, SK, or their new home in Winnipeg, Jean takes pride in their prairie roots. Jean has performed on stages across Winnipeg, Saskatoon, and beyond in shows such as Winnipeg Studio Theatre’s production of Fame (Nick Piazza), and most recently in Rainbow Stage’s 2023 Productions of Rent (Ensemble) and The Little Mermaid (Swing). When not performing, they can be found playing D&D with friends, cuddling with their cat Lilith, or watering their house-plants (of which they have far too many).
Brady Barrientos is a Treaty One-based Filipino artist finding their voice through the arts. Brady studies classical voice at the University of Manitoba, striving to curate a unique sound by combining the classical technique with pop/musical theatre colours. From music, to theatre, to poetry, he lives and breathes artistry: music and performing being their biggest passion. He also spends a lot of time writing his own music. Credits include: Rocking Horse Winner (Manitoba Underground Opera); The Little Mermaid (Rainbow Stage); Charlie Brown, The Velveteen Rabbit (MTYP); Alice In Wonderland (Bad Hats/MTYP), as well as being a proud long-time workshop artist for MA-BUHAY! You can also catch them in the musical duo violent affection.
