The Winnipeg Singers celebrate Winnipeg's 150th year by celebrating the diverse groups that contributed to the history of song in the city. We have invited the Spirit Sands Singers, an Anishinabe singing group from Swan Lake, Manitoba to start the event. Their name comes from a small desert in central Canada that is considered a special and sacred place by surrounding communities, and was used for Vision Quests and special ceremonies. We have invited the Norman Chief Dancers from Winnipeg, who celebrate traditional style Metis music and dance.
The Winnipeg Singers have chosen a selection of choral works that celebrate the contribution from European composers made to the development of song in the city. We look forward to the future of choral music in the city, celebrating the many opportunities for all of these diverse groups to collaborate in new works and projects.
